Stefan Zehetbauer runs the family winery in their tenth generation. The winery is located in Schützen am Gebirge, Burgenland, at the foot of the Leithaberg hills. The vineyards are all strongly influenced from the limestone (shell limestone called “Leithakalk”) and mica slate soils that define the appellation Leithaberg DAC. The priorities lie in the vineyard work. The family sticks to the principle of carefully supporting the vines and relying on old but healthy vineyards. Natural green cover, composted pomace as natural fertilizer or no usage of herbicides are a few examples of their work approach.
The wines clearly and distinctly reflect the region and the terroir. Handpicking and careful selection is key. The interventions in the cellar are reduced to a minimum. Everything is fermented spontaneously; the wines are matured for extended periods on the lees and the reserve wines are bottled without any fining. Producing precise and elegant wines with striking minerality and ageing potential are important for Stefan Zehetbauer.
Blaufränkisch, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay are the most important varieties in the range of offerings. The high-end wines come from the Steinberg which is regarded as one of the top sites in the appellation. The family also made themselves a name in Austria especially with their unique Cabernet Franc.
