Chianti Superiore Docg

Donatella Cinelli Colombini's Chianti Superiore is produced in Fattoria del Colle at 404 meters of altitude, on top of  high hills that surround the Crete Senesi area. The vineyards are on ridges, in a position that is ventilated and well exposed to the sun; they have 5.500 vines per hectare that produce only a little over one kilo of grapes each one. Few grapes and a lot of manual work – both during the cultivation and harvest – they give us an excellent result. Vinification and ageing are carried out in the winery and cellar of  Fattoria del Colle that is placed right among the vineyards.

Leone Rosso Orcia Doc

The DOC Orcia denomination to which the Leone Rosso wine belongs was born on February 14th 2000 and is produced in 13 municipalities between the areas producing Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Leon Rosso is born at Fattoria del Colle an estate that covers 335 hectares at 404 m above sea level on the crest of hills that face the Crete Senesi. The soil is made up prevalently of sands and sea clays. The vineyards are cultivated according to the organic regime, mainly by hand and with great care.

The name of the wine comes from the Socini blazon, these were ancestors of the present owner, Donatella Cinelli Colombini, and built the estate in 1592.This was them confiscated shortly after because they were members of the protestant reform- Fattoria del Colle was bought back for the family in by Donatella’s great grandfather in 1919, and she has been running it since 1998.

Il Drago e le 8 Colombe IGT Toscana rosso

The wine “Il Drago e le 8 Colombe” has a strange name because it has a curious beginning. It is produced in
Donatella Cinelli Colombinis wineries, where the staff are all women, represented by the 8 doves on the label:
Donatella, her daughter Violante who together with Debora takes care of wine sales, Alessia who is in charge of the
incoming, Barbara the cellar master with her helpers Antonella and Margherita, and last but not least Valérie
Lavigne the wine maker. A formidable team flanked by the men and women grape growers but also by Donatella’s
husband Carlo Gardini, who has created a range of sweet wines for this winery. He is the dragon in the label to
emphasize a male presence in an all female winery, which is feminine not feminist.
Il Drago e le 8 Colombe is a “Supertuscan” a Tuscan wine not covered by a DOC regime. To begin with this type
of wine included those of modern style and high quality. It was created in the 1970’s as a reaction to the rules of the
appellations that limited the possibility of experimenting. Practically a rebellion against tradition, and this was
sustained by the press and by America consumers. Later the Supertuscan became IGT Toscana appellation, and in
some cases (such as Sassicaia ) they become DOC. Il Drago e le 8 Colombe is an IGT Supertuscan produced at
Fattoria del Colle.

In some years the tasters have decide not to produce a Brunello Prime Donne, but when they do, as in 2012, they always create small masterpieces that obtain excellent ratings from the most important international press.

Rosso di Montalcino Doc

Well deserved 5 stars for this 2015 harvest. The Rosso di Montalcino from Casato Prime Donne fills us with
enthusiasm.
Everybody is asking if the 2015 vintage will be a repetition of the 2010. You will be the first to give your opinion
to this Rosso di Montalcino, while waiting for the Brunello that is still resting in the barrels.
In 2015 the ripening of the Sangiovese grapes was slow and perfect thanks to the position of the vineyards being on
the cooler side of the Montalcino hill. The clusters reached the day of picking sound with a great balance inn
acidity, alcohol and polyphenolic ripening. Fantastic!
The 2015 harvest was a musical one: splendid grapes, sunny weather and in the fields 18 pickers among which
many young adults with earphones as if they were joggers.
Maybe it was the music that gave them the right charge and rhythm because they were very rapid, with these red
crates moving quickly. The cellar master Barbara Magnani had to ask them often to slow down so as to give the
women time to chose the grapes carefully on the sorting tables before sending them into the fermentation vats.
A happy harvest, that even when the wine was in the cellar, continued to prove favourable with slower and longer
fermentations than usual. The vinification started softly and proceeded for 10 days, very regularly, while, in other
vintages the transformation of sugar into alcohol, took place in half the time. Fantastic!

Sanchimento IGT Toscana bianco

San Chimento and San Clemente were the same person: Pope Clemente 1st who died in Sebastopoli, maybe a martyr, at the end of the 1st century. In medieval documents the two names are often swapped and in the Sienese territory, crib of the Italian language, where still today there is a local vernacular surviving that is quite a conjunction between Latin and Italian, the names Chimento and Clemente continue to live together. So the chapel at Fattoria del Colle built by the owners ancestors, in 1592 is dedicated to San Clemente is surrounded by a farmhouse Sanchimento pronounced and written all in one word.

Sanchimento is also the name of a wine obtained with Traminer grapes that are grown near the chapel in the Sanchimento property.

Rosa di Tetto IGT rosato

Rosa di Tetto is born at Fattoria del Colle at 400 above sea level, in a Sangiovese vineyard planted in 1999. Its style is more French rather than Italian, its colour is very “tea rose” but most of all in the taste and in the aroma which recalls green apples and flowers

At Fattoria del Colle there is a long tradition in the producing rosé, it began around 1990 with the name “Acqua di Tetto”. The present owner Donatella Cinelli Colombini changed the name choosing “Rosa di Tetto” in honour of the three centenary roses that vigorously grow on the villa facade and the chapel at Colle. Ruining the roofs and forcing Donatella to carry out annual pruning that need special pruning elevators, tractors and many saws.

Vin Santo delo Chianti Docg

Vin Santo is part of the Tuscan culture just like Giotto or Boccaccio. All of the historic wineries in our region have a vin santo loft. These remind one of the era when the noble owners would come on holiday here and had great banquets that would conclude with dry biscuits and Vin Santo. Fattoria del Colle also had its loft with a few caratelli for vin santo, an intense tasting blond nectar.

Visitors can see this area by going up the steps that begin in the cellar. Other than the caratelli, these special small barrels for the ageing of Vin Santo, where it stays from 5-10 years, in the vinsantaia it is possible also to see a collection of splendid photographs by Giuseppe Cucco that develop  a study on the image of food carried out by Vincenzo Pagano.

Recently the 2002 Vin Santo from Fattoria del Colle eas rated 95/100 by the prestigious US wine magazine Wine Advocate by Robert Parker Jr.

We strongly suggest not to dip cantucci biscuits into the Vin Santo. The marriage between wine and biscuit must take place in the mouth and not in the glass. This habbi of imerging the iscuit on the Vn Santo fills the wine with impurities and ruins the extraordinary taste.

Grappa di Cenerentola

Cenerentola Doc Orcia is Violante Gardini’s favourite wine (Cinellicolombini Jr); she has hence created a grappa in small bottles quite apt for young princesses. <<I am a great romantic and the Cinderella fairytale always made me dream, also the Cenerentola wine is the one I love most, for this reason I have created a young grappa from one grape variety dressing it like a princess, elegant and trendy>> says Violante when talking about her first marketing project for 600 small but very refined bottles of Grappa di Cenerentola.

GRAPPA FROM FOGLIA TONDA GRAPES
First of all the grappa: one must remember that it comes from the distillation of the grape-skins extracted from the vats and pressed, when the fermentation is finished and the wine is racked into another container. Violante has used the Foglia Tonda skins, a local autochthonous variety o grapes from the Siena region used only for the production of the ’Orcia Doc “Cenerentola”. She has chosen the “Distillerie Alboni Srl” for the distillation, a small artisanal workshop in Mensanello, near Colle Val d’Elsa, so quite close and where the grape skins reach still warm. The facility uses the discontinuous system with vapour from two boilers and a still where everything is done manually and the process is very long.

PACKAGING: CENERENTOLA BECOMES A YOUNG PRINCESS
<<I only had 120 litres of grappa but it was precisely for this reason, the exceptional quality of this brandy distilled product obtained from a rare and old grape variety ,Foglia Tonda, of which Fattoria del Colle is the major producer, that I had the idea of a challenge. A new type of packaging: a very small 20 c bottle, like perfume, pace in a shiny black mini-shopper-bag, Like those we young women use to go to the beach with our friends>>. In other words this packaging g is revolutionary, very modern, and in young people’s day to day life. Violante had the label made by Simone Nannipieri from the agency Winetrade who prepared a negative relief of the Cenerentola Doc Orcia label on a silver rimmed hammered paper. In the end the resemblance with perfume packaging is great and the message of exclusivity and prestige are evident. The shopping bag also has a silver logo, as is the word Cenerentola written on the silk bow that ties the blue tissue paper in which the bottle is wrapped, and that pokes out of the bag, just like in a boutique.

FINALLY A GRAPPA FOR YOUNG WOMEN BUT NOT ONLY
<In other words when I finally saw the bottle with the label I nearly cried> Violante said, proud of her creation and to have proposed a traditional distilled product such as grappa to a younger and a feminine market using a trendy attire appreciated by the younger generations.

Passito di Traminer IGT

Donatella Cinelli Colombini has a husband and a cellar master who are both passionate about sweet wines. They taste them, they buy them, and it was quite a while now that they wished to make a passito with the Traminer grapes from the small vineyard above the chapel at Fattoria del Colle. Carlo Gardini and Barbara Magnani’s insistence did not convince Donatella who on the contrary only loves red wines aged in barrel, so every year she postponed the production of the passito. The  “passito” subject caused continuous quarrels between husband and wife.

In the end Carlo took things into his own hands, he bought the baskets for the drying out of the grapes, a small vat and an oak barrel. Barbara took care of the grapes and the wine daily. At the end the result obtained id even better than their dreams: only 350 bottles of but of exceptional quality. Those who taste the passito are overwhelmed by the aroma, the elegance and the richness of this wine born from a quarrel.

Now even Donatella is convinced and now peace reigns in the family. She is as proud as her husband when she offers the passito with a satisfied smile, she has even decided to increase the production of Traminer in a part of the vineyard that had been grafter over with another variety and in the future it will once again produce white grapes.

Producing passito is an annual ritual that captivates Donatella Cinelli Colombini and most of all her husband Carlo Gardini. A maniacal attention that is possible only because very few bottles are made and because Carlo Gardini and the cellar master Barbara Magnani have unlimited passion for sweet wines. Their efforts have been rewarded with 93/100 for the 2013 production by Wine Advocate.
